On 25 July 1946, the United States conducted the first-ever underwater nuclear explosion. Test Baker, detonated at the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, was the fifth of over 2,000 nuclear explosions conducted to date. Of these, only a few were underwater explosions, carried out mainly to assess the damage to ships and submarines. The majority of the tests - around three quarters - were conducted underground and the rest in the atmosphere, apart from a handful of nuclear tests in outer space, such as the 1962 Starfish Prime test.
 
The Baker device was suspended under a ship around 30 metres below the sea surface and yielded 23 kilotons. The test followed the atmospheric Test Able on 1 July 1946, both using the same design as the Nagasaki bomb. The objective was the same: to assess the effects of a nuclear explosion on a fleet of ships and on animals. Both tests were part of the 'Operation Crossroads' that involved some 42,000 personnel, 242 ships, 156 airplanes and the relocation of all 162 residents from the Bikini Atoll.
 
All of the pigs and most of the rats on the ships died either from the blast or from radiation exposure. Of the 57 target vessels, eight either sunk or capsized as a direct result of the explosion. Eight more suffered extensive damage. Most of the remaining ships were highly radioactive and remained so despite decontamination efforts, which consisted of scrubbing or spraying the decks. Their main result was to expose those involved to radioactivity, of which test Baker had produced considerably more than Able. "A China Eastern Airlines jetliner carrying 132 people crashed in the mountains in southern China's Guangxi region on Monday afternoon, according to the country's Civil Aviation Administration (CAAC).
 
The Boeing 737 was en route from the southwestern city of Kunming to Guangzhou when it lost contact over the city of Wuzhou. On board were 123 passengers and nine crew members, CAAC said in a statement posted online.
China Eastern Airlines confirmed those details and said it had activated emergency procedures, including a line for emergency assistance for family members.
Rescue efforts are underway at the scene of the crash, but there were no immediate details on the possible cause or the number of casualties.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Chinese coast guard ships fired water cannons at two Philippine patrol vessels Tuesday near a disputed shoal in the South China Sea, damaging both in the latest flare-up in an increasingly tense territorial conflict.
 
There were no immediate reports of injuries in the incident off Scarborough Shoal, one of two hotly disputed areas where confrontations between China and the Philippines have flared on and off since last year.
 
A Philippine coast guard ship and an accompanying fisheries vessel were patrolling the waters off Scarborough Shoal when four Chinese coast guard ships, backed by six suspected militia ships, executed dangerous blocking maneuvers, Philippine coast guard spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela said.
 
A Chinese coast guard ship used a water cannon against the fisheries vessel, the BRP Bankaw, and two other Chinese coast guard ships hit the Philippine coast guard ship, the BRP Bagacay, simultaneously from both sides, damaging part of its deck railing and a canopy, Tarriela added.
 
“China’s coast guard and maritime militia vessels harassed, blocked and rammed vessels of the Philippine coast guard and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources,” a Philippine government task force dealing with the territorial disputes said.
