A New Study Says Nearly 6,000 Died In Puerto Rico After Hurricane Maria, Far Exceeding The Original 64 Reported Deaths!
According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Tuesyda, the number of people who died in Puerto Rico as a result of Hurricane Maria was at least seventy times higher than the official death toll.
The government’s count came under suspicion first by the Puerto Rico Center for Investigative Reporting and BuzzFeed News in the days after the hurricane devastated the island.
The Puerto Rican government’s official death toll is 64, last updated on Dec. 4. However the study estimates that 5,740 people died as a result of the storm.
Tuesday’s study report shows the lack of direction about how to record and report hurricane-related deaths led to a significant under-count by officials.
President Donald Trump, during his visit to the island in October, used the relatively low official death toll to measure how Puerto Rico had not suffered a “real catastrophe†like New Orleans had following Katrina. Posted By Ghost
