Unconfirmed reports of an ace Ukrainian fighter pilot have gone viral, with social media users dubbing the fighter the â€œGhost of Kyiv.â€�

Supposedly downing as many as six Russian planes in the first day of combat, the Ghost of Kyiv â€” and their MiG-29 Fulcrum â€” quickly became a folk hero in a war breathlessly watched online.

According to one widely circulated post, the Ghost of Kyiv is believed to have shot down four Russian fighter jets â€” two Su-35 Flankers, one Su-27 Flanker and one MiG-29 Fulcrum â€” as well as two ground-attack aircraft, so-called Su-25 Frogfoots.

The world record for the fastest speed achieved by a manned aircraft was set by Major William "Pete" Knight on October 3, 1967. Piloting the experimental X-15 Major Knight was clocked going 7,274 km/h (4,520 mph), or Mach 6.7. 
 
For us ground-folk, it's hard to put that speed into perspective, which is why this compilation of aircraft top speeds over the decades is such a shock to the system.
