DESCRIPTION

Maria Torres was shopping for bananas at a Portland, Oregon Fred Meyer in October 2023 when she slipped backward on water leaking from the roof and slammed her head on the floor. Employees ran over with umbrellas and paper towels to shield her while the ceiling kept dripping, and she ended up hospitalized for three days with a concussion. She sued Kroger for $36 million, arguing the store knew about that decades-old roof leak, and the case settled for an undisclosed amount on the sixth day of trial. Fred Meyer installed catch pans after she fell.
