After a summer of particularly heinous weather in New York, another round of flooding thanks to Hurricane Ida has sent the city into a spiral. When the weather turns like this, itâ€™s not uncommon to see clips on social media of the streets filling up as natives and tourists wade through the water, or take cover in random awnings as the storm passes.

Dozens of floors burned in the China Telecom building in the city of Changsha, the capital of central Hunan province. The cityâ€™s fire department said it sent 280 firefighters who were able to quickly extinguish the blaze on the 720-footbuilding. 

No injuries or deaths have been reported, China Telecom said in a statement. It said there was no disruption to cellphone service, but social media users complained of being unable to use their phones. 

Videos of the blaze showed one side of the building scorched black, with debris falling to the ground. Other videos from local media showed workers inside managing to evacuate the building. Red Air Flight 203 from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, had landed around 5:30 p.m. when the landing gear in the nose of the plane collapsed, Miami International Airport officials said.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Heartbreaking video posted to social media shows massive flames from a wildfire as it approached a mobile home in Vernon Parish Thursday night. The man who took the video identified it as his sister’s home located in Evans, Louisiana.

Despite the intense flames, the family tells KPLC-TV in Lake Charles that the home was spared. However, the home’s siding was melted, and the sewer and water lines were damaged.
 
State officials have issued a burn ban across Louisiana, forbidding outdoor burning until further notice. Weeks of intense heat and very little rain have led to extremely dry conditions across much of the state.

"Police in North Carolina are investigating after a 12-year-old shot at two masked intruders, fatally wounding one of them, after they forced their way into an apartment and shot the boy's grandmother.

Officers responded about 1 a.m. Saturday to a report of a shooting in a residential area. Police arrived at the scene to find a 73-year-old woman suffering from gunshot wound. Shortly after, a man who had also been shot was found at a nearby intersection.
The victim and the suspect were both transported to Wayne UNC Health Care hospital. The man, identified as Khalil Herring, 19, of Goldsboro, died from his injuries.

The investigation revealed two people forced their way into the home, demanded money and shot the woman in the leg. During the robbery, a 12-year-old shot the intruders with a firearm in self-defense, causing them to flee, investigators said. Evidence suggests Herring was one of the two masked intruders and was shot during the incident.

"They came in the house, I open the door, I open it, and they came in there. ... One guy had a gun. They just put me down on the ground," said Randolph Bunn, the woman's son. Bunn is also the great-uncle of the child who fired the gun." - NC News

TOKYO, Jan 2 (Reuters) - All 379 people aboard a Japan Airlines (JAL) plane escaped the burning airliner after a collision with a Coast Guard aircraft at Tokyo's Haneda airport that killed five of six crew on the smaller craft on Tuesday. Live footage on public broadcaster NHK showed the JAL (9201.T) Airbus (AIR.PA) A350 airliner burst into flames as it skidded down the tarmac shortly before 6 p.m. (0900 GMT). "I felt a boom like we had hit something and jerked upward the moment we landed," a passenger told Kyodo news agency. "I saw sparks outside the window and the cabin filled with gas and smoke." All 367 passengers and 12 crew were evacuated from the blaze which destroyed the airliner. At least 17 people on it were injured, NHK reported, citing the Tokyo Fire Department. Transport Minister Tetsuo Saito confirmed that five of the Coast Guard aircraft's crew had died while the captain of the plane had been injured. A ministry official told a press briefing the JAL plane was attempting to land normally when it collided with the Coast Guard's Bombardier-built Dash-8 maritime patrol plane on the runway. ||
