"Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope say they have stumbled onto possible signs of life coming from a massive Earth-like exoplanet, NASA confirmed in a release.

K2-18 b is an exoplanet — a planet outside our solar system — that’s 8.6 times as massive as Earth. A new investigation with the JWST revealed the presence of “carbon-bearing molecules” that include methane and carbon dioxide. The findings add to recent studies that suggest that K2-18 b could be a Hycean exoplanet, meaning it has the potential to hold a hydrogen-rich atmosphere and a water-covered surface, NASA reported.

Astronomers first studied K2-18 b’s atmosphere with NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope in 2019. The results prompted further studies of the massive exoplanet that have changed experts understanding of the system.

“Our findings underscore the importance of considering diverse habitable environments in the search for life elsewhere,” explained Nikku Madhusudhan, an astronomer at the University of Cambridge and lead author of the paper announcing these results.

Shark Island or "Death Island" was one of five concentration camps located on Shark Island off LÃ¼deritz, in Central Namibia. It was used by the German Empire during the Herero and Namaqua genocide of 1904â€“1908. Between 1,032 and 3,000 Herero and Namaqua men, women, and children died in the camp between its opening in 1905 and its closing in April 1907. 
 
On 12 January 1904, the Herero people rebelled against German colonial rule under the leadership of Samuel Maharero. Origins of the Herero revolt date back to the 1890s when tribes settled in Namibia came under pressure from the growing number of German settlers wanting their land, cattle, and labor. Factors such as loss of property, increasing debt in an attempt to resettle lost herds, low wages on white-owned farms, and racial inequalities only intensified the hostility between the Herero and the Germans.[11]
 
When the Herero rebelled, they killed over 100 German settlers near the town of Okahandja. Over 15,000 German reinforcements under the command of Lothar Von Trotha defeated the Herero force at the Waterberg River in August 1904.
 
Two months later, the Nama people broke out in a similar rebellion against German colonists. Traditional rivalries prevented the Herero and Nama from joining together, however both groups continued fighting guerrilla warfare against the German colonial forces.
 
Following the abandonment of Lothar von Trotha's policy of exterminating Herero within the borders of German South West Africa by denying them access to water holes, the colonial authorities adopted a policy of sweeping the bush clear of Herero â€“ both civilians and rebels â€“ and removing them, either voluntarily or by force, to concentration camps.

A new video shows a gun-toting man running from NYPD officers after gunfire erupted at theÂ Dominican Day ParadeÂ in the Bronx last weekend, cops said.
 
The video shows the 22-year-old running with a firearm after shots were fired at about 4:20 p.m. Sunday at Grand Concourse and Elliot Place, according to a police spokeswoman. 
 
The video shows officers chasing the man, who was clad in bright yellow and wearing a black hoodie, before he drops the weapon on the street.
The man allegedly seen in the video, Elvin Manuel Hidalgo-Santos, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and reckless endangerment in the first degree, police said. 
 
He pleaded not guilty and was held on $15,000 bond or $25,000 cash bail. He was locked up on Rikers Island Thursday, records show. Posted by JR

Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The cityâ€™s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphiaâ€™s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphiaâ€™s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington. 
 
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphiaâ€™s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphiaâ€™s problem. Peel Regional Police released stunning security camera video Wednesday showing a woman run over a man while allegedly stealing his Porsche SUV earlier this month in Mississauga.

That woman, now wanted for the vehicle theft and dangerous operation causing bodily harm, is captured on the video telling the man she's at his home to see the Porsche Cayenne. Police said she was responding to an Auto Trader ad, and the incident took place at around 2 p.m. on Sept. 6 in the Winston Churchill and Eglinton Avenue area.

She tells the man she's waiting for her dad, but asks to see the vehicle first. The doorbell camera captures a clear image of the suspect, who Peel Regional Police are still trying to identify. When the man moves behind the white SUV, the woman reverses hard and slams into him. The man disappears from view as the SUV races backward onto the street.

Somehow, he bounces up, though he holds his back as he confronts the woman through the window.

The video shared by police doesn't show the SUV driving away, but it was stolen, according to a news release.

Police are also looking for information about the drivers of two other SUVs — one that's silver-grey and one that's blue — in connection with the case.
